Armed standoff in Bensalem

Posted in News on Thursday, September 10th, 2009 at 3:22 pm by Courier Times staff writer Danny Adler

This photo was taken by crime reporter Matt Coughlin at the armed standoff in Bensalem.

Bensalem police are rerouting traffic away from the Brookwood community off Hulmeville and Street roads at this hour, officials said.

The neighborhood is a mix of single family homes and an apartment complex.

The police are in a standoff with an armed man in one of the apartments, according to officials.

No injuries have been reported.

Bensalem School District has instituted an “exterior lockdown” at the nearby Robert K. Shafer and Cecelia Snyder middle schools and Benjamin Rush Elementary School until further notice, a district spokeswoman said.

That means no students are allowed outside the school buildings.

District officials also are trying to determine if school buses will be able to bring high school level students home to that area, the spokeswoman said. If not, the district will provide shelter for the kids until the situation is resolved, she said.

Standoff ends peacefully in Bensalem

Posted in News on Thursday, September 10th, 2009 at 7:18 pm by Crime reporter Ben Finley

After a four-hour standoff that involved the SWAT team, Bensalem police negotiators and the county detective’s robotic device, a 27-year-old Bensalem man threatening to kill himself surrendered to police at 6:30 p.m., Bensalem Public Safety Director Fred Harran said.

The man was believed to be armed with a shotgun and had mental health issues, Harran said. The man had threatened to kill himself via text messages to his girlfriend, Harran said. He also had several previous contacts with police.

No one was harmed in the standoff on the 1600 block of Brookwood Drive, which is near the intersection of Street and Hulmeville roads.

The standoff prevented some people in the neighborhood from going to their homes, which were evacuated. Also, some school children who lived in the Brookwood neighborhood were unable to go home. Those attending Bensalem schools stayed at school during the standoff while those attending other schools who lived in Brookwood had and had to be picked up by their parents.

Sep 10 2009

Ok, so I live in Bensalem,PA and there was just some type of shooting around my school like 1 hour ago… I’m scared as ****.

I was in Spanish and we heard like loud noises (gunshots) and then our teacher told us to duck down and there was a lockdown..
Now im at home and im scared as shiit everyone I know has no-idea whats going on either..
I saw police cars, ambulances, and swat armored trucks passing my school.
So, I’m home alone and the only upside to this is I got home earlier than usual..
