About The Event
True Experimental Music. Join us for a night of experiments, in the empirical sense, about sound. We invited nine artists to reimagine the familiar space of the Rotunda for an evening of sonic provocations. The night will unfold four parts: Sergei Tcherepnin and Woody Sullender, (2) FUN, (3) Scott Allison and Joo Won Park, and (4) Cotton Poodle (Sam Cusumano / Eugene Lew). Each group was proposed the same basic question – how can we construct space and forms using sound as the medium? The only restriction was that it had to have a set duration and be performable – in other words, no installations. What will happen? Will the experiments succeed or fail? FUN Theatre Intangible Variations
“I’ve been sitting on this one for way to long. Shortly after their phenomenal Theatre Intangible improv, sound artists FUN sent me their variations on the episode. What can you do with 20 minutes of textural noises? If you’re FUN, the answer is quite a lot! They sliced, diced, chopped, and recontextualized the audio (even using my voice during the level checks), turning an already great improv into an EPIC audio journey, the Leaves Of Grass of noise collage. The result is like nothing we’ve ever released. Fan of field recording, sound art, audio collage, and artists such as Merzbow and Davenport will love this. Summer Video Zone® 2011
Lydia Grey and Jim Jeffers welcome audience involvement in their first joint work Remotely Functional. This live piece will be performed and re-performed throughout the evening, with Grey at Vox Populi and Jeffers 356 miles away, along the top of Nantucket Sound on Cape Cod.
Boston-based conceptual artist Jessica Gath will present [W]Rapper, in which she accepts, wraps and returns objects to partygoers, accompanied by pulsing rap music. According to Philadelphia Weekly, Gath’s work “represents a kinder, gentler side of performance art that focuses on serving the public.” Vox Populi member Micah Danges and friend Marc Zajack also offer a service of sorts, transforming one of the gallery’s spaces into a slacker’s paradise, complete with pitch-perfect decor; vintage surf and skate video projections; Grateful Dead and boogie on the sound system; and a delicious summer drink mixed by the artists.
Finally, the Summer Open Video Jam is an opportunity – open to all – for emerging video artists and filmmakers to share their work in a renowned venue. Organizer Christopher P. McManus extends an invitation to this open mike night for moving image: “Bring your videos to Vox Populi Gallery’s August First Friday event and we will play them!”
