UNO HOUSE RULES

GAME PLAY

To start a hand, seven cards are dealt to each player, and the top card of the remaining deck is flipped over and set aside to begin the discard pile. The player to the dealer’s left plays first (you can also choose the youngest player) and gameplay usually follows a clockwise direction.

On a player’s turn, they must do one of the following:

  • Play one card matching the top card in the discard pile in color, number, action, symbol or theme.
  • Play a Wild card.
  • Draw the top card from the deck. If that card can be played, play it. Otherwise, keep the card, and the game moves to the next person in turn.

Cards are played by laying them face-up on top of the discard pile.

The game continues until a player has one card left. The moment a player plays their penultimate card they must call out “UNO” as a warning to the other players. If they are caught not saying “Uno” by another player before the next player has taken their turn, that player must draw two cards as a penalty.

STACKING

The stacking rule allows players to combine and stack draw penalties of the same type.

Color doesn’t matter here.

  • Passing the Penalty: If a player plays a draw card, the next player can play a draw card of the same or higher value to avoid drawing cards.
  • Accumulating Penalties: The penalty value is added together as players continue to stack draw cards. For example, if a +4 is played and then a +6 is stacked on top, the next player must draw 10 cards (unless they can stack a higher card).
  • End of the Stack: If a player cannot stack (either because they don’t have a higher draw card or choose not to), they must draw the total number of cards in the stack.

Dual action cards can also be added to the stack. However, they must fit with the pattern of accumulating penalties in the stack.
